you can buy clayboards for this...it's basically a piece of masonite with a layer of clay, then it is sprayed black with india ink. you scratch the ink away to do the drawing. i used an exacto knife, but there is more specialized 'weapons' to do that.
once you get the feel for it, i found it was very much like working with pen and ink... just backwards. it's either black or white... no in between. the shading works similar to ink with cross hatches and other various textures.
all in all.. it was very enjoyable to do and not nearly as difficult as i had imagined... easy when you know how...lol!
